Everyone asked for Barbara Granger & Marion Spyke. They have always been a staple at these meetings for Davie, so let it be know that you both were missed terribly! Judy Rosentreter was recognized for her hard work as the Renaissance Chair and our Club was recognized for our contributions to the SI America's.

Friday night when we went out on a dinner cruise with pirates! What a hoot those ladies are from Upper Pinellas County! Fish net stockings, scarves, hats, boots etc. You name it and they were wearing it! They even brought a bunch of cute pirates of the male variety along with them! We had dinner with a new friend, Rosemarie from the Atlanta club.

The next morning the mayor was giving us the "official" welcome and we thought he looked very familiar ... lo, and behold! He was one of the pirates from the ship the night before! Our guest speaker was Catherine Stanford from California. You may recall that name since she is the women we voted(unanimously) for at our last luncheon for President elect of SI America! We definitely picked a great lady for that position and I'll let you know as soon as I learn the election results.

The winners of the Service Project was SI Largo, and what a great project they have! They adopted Pinellas Village and the link is provided if you'd like to learn more. In addition to providing Christmas gifts, they assisted the children in choosing a gift for their parent, helped them make cards and wrap their gift. What a lovely project this is!

All three of the WOA winners were at lunch to receive their cash awards from the Southern Region and now the first place winner goes on to SI of the Americas. The VRA winner was a wonderful girl from Miami --- so many amazing things she volunteers for, we all wondered if she ever slept!

After the meetings the girls and I walked on the beach, had nachos and Donna beat the pants off Angie at ping pong! That night we had a nice fancy dinner where Connie said her good-byes as Governor. However, she was quick to point out she is still technically the Governor until June 30th! We gave her a congratulations/good job card from our club with an angel volunteer pin & a circle of friends pin. The new "Gov" Nidia had us up to her suite for some after-dinner drinks and a toast. We look forward to working with her!

At the good-bye breakfast eulogies for members that have passed on during the year were presented. These women all had amazing stories, but the Homestead club had one that I have to share with you: One of her last requests was to be sure that her funeral was NOT held on Tuesday so as to not interfere with the club's meetings! Toward the end of her illness she felt too weak to get dressed and said if she went to the meeting it would have to be in her robe & slippers. A club member picked her up and the entire club came in dressed in their robes and slippers ... in the restaurant! At the end of their lunch they presented an award for Best Robe & Slippers! Angie told them we want to be like them when we grow up!

---Susan

Power of Attorney ...

The handsome man in the photos is a local attorney who took his life in his own hands when he came to our program meeting in March. Not only did he play to the camera, but he talked to our members about the importance of using care when giving Power of Attorney to another person.

Jeffrey told us that a Power of Attorney is a legal instrument that is used to delegate legal authority to another. The person who signs (executes) a Power of Attorney is called the Principal. The power of Attorney gives legal authority to another person (called an Agent or Attorney-in-Fact) to make property, financial and other legal decisions for the Principal.

A Principal can give an Agent broad legal authority or very limited authority. The Power of Attorney is frequently used to help in the event of a Principal's illness or disability or in legal transactions where the principal cannot be present to sign necessary legal documents.

We appreciated his serious side and the knowledge he shared and we thoroughly enjoyed his playful side. I think I speak for all of us when I say we admired his courage to come to a meeting of just women in the middle of the day!

He further surprised us when he offered to serve as a sponsor of our annual golf tournament which is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Miss Molla, a native of Peru, embodies the spirit of Soroptimist as a hardworking and conscientious young woman striving to make her life better through education. Stay tuned for more information about our Winner! We're looking forward to getting to know her better!
Another topic that drew a number of comments was the civil unrest in Kenya and how it is affecting the women and children caught up in the fighting. For many of them, survival is the operative word of each day. After discussing the issues, the membership voted unanimously to contribute $250 to aid Soroptimist International's efforts in Kenya.

We can't save the whole world, and we know it. But we can save a little piece here and a little piece there. And, if all the other Soroptimists Clubs are saving a little piece, well ... you just never know. The club is seeking support from the community and offers several different ways to participate in the Soroptimist Golf Tournament, including foursome teams, sponsors, program ads and tee signs. Registration begins at 7 AM with a continental breakfast followed by a shotgun start at 8 AM. A morning of golfing on one of South Florida’s most beautiful courses will be followed by a luncheon that includes free drinks, raffle and door prizes and a terrific silent auction.

Soroptimist International of Davie shares one common goal: to foster the ideal of service. They are community leaders working together to improve the quality of life for their fellow human beings locally while supporting global human rights efforts.

The club meets twice a month, on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and they welcome women who are seeking to give back to the community through service. The second meeting each month is a “program” meeting and informative presentations on topics ranging from health care to conservation of natural resources are provided. The club featured Maureen Mann, Executive Director of Outpatient/Cancer Services at Holy Cross Hospital as guest speaker at their August program meeting, demonstrating the quality of their programming.

SIDavie was chartered in 1986 and took on preservation and restoration of Old Davie School as their first community service project. Today, the school, built in 1918, is fully restored and serves as a museum of local history and culture. Soroptimist International of Davie went on to adopt many other causes to support, including Project Stable, EASE Foundation, Davie Elementary School and the annual Women’s Opportunity Award which provides financial support for training to women returning to the workplace.

Anyone interested in attending a meeting or playing in the tournament should contact Susan Starkey at 954-882-0227 or Barbara Granger at 954-309-1842. Soroptimist International of Davie is a wonderful club and provides significant community support throughout the year. The doctors told her over the weekend that they had done all they could to help her and that now it is in God's hands. The mom has been staying at the hospital for nearly the entire time, not able to work but a few hours here and there and Cindy was saying how stressed out the mom is ... her 7-year-old boy is beginning to show signs of wear and tear and the mom is worried how she'll pay her bills.

I suggested to Cindy that she write a letter and I'd bring it to the Soroptimist meeting and ask if they could help. I knew they had helped others in the past and considering it's our mission to do what's "best for women and children," I figured it was worth a shot.

So, at the end of "new business" I asked if I could read Cindy's letter. And, I did. And, what followed was nothing short of amazing to me. My Soroptimist sisters not only passed a motion to provide financial assistance, they took up a collection of cash and a gas card, another sister provided for the 7-year-old to participate in art therapy at no cost, another sister (an elected official) jumped in and offered to facilitate some public assistance and, lo and behold, we had helped yet another mother and her children to get through a crisis without feeling totally alone.

When I returned to my office and shared the news with Cindy, her eyes welled up with tears. She is so touched by what this wonderful group of women did for someone they don't know! And, this morning, when I came to work, she shared with me how touched the mom is ... how she was so surprised to be the focus of attention and assistance.

I remember once, some 18 years ago, when a catastrophe occurred in my life and some wonderful women I knew gathered round me and provided for some basic needs with cash and food and much comforting. I have never forgotten the kindness of those women and it makes my heart swell to be able to serve as a conduit for someone else in need.

I've been a member of Soroptimist of Davie since December 2002 and it is the ONLY club I belong to! I was never much of a joiner, but these guys are so terrific! so wonderful! how could I not love being one of them?

To which I must add: I love each and every one of you for your kind hearts, your great spirits and your can-do attitude! Being with you all is just as much fun as my summer vacation and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to be a part of the most wonderful club in the world!

"Luck is not chance, it's toil;
fortune's expensive smile is earned"

--- Emily Dickinson

As the "official blogger" for our club, I had the privilege of capturing a moment today at our meeting. We also provide scholarships and grants to girls and women for advancement of their education. This weekend, the club will participate in the annual Relay for Life at Pioneer Middle School beginning Saturday afternoon.
Recently, one of our club members asked “Why do you Relay?”
The following response came from long-time Soroptimist, Barbara Spiece Granger. She e-mailed it to her “sister” Soroptimists and I’m sending it to you. Once you read it, you’ll understand why. Why we Relay, that is:
“Saturday morning my cousin finally gave up her fight against Breast Cancer. She was diagnosed approximately 14 years ago. She had a bone marrow transplant, hormone therapies, numerous chemo therapies – She tried holistic cures in conjunction with the newest “drugs” on the market. She had some years during that 14 when she was symptom free and some that were hospital intense. During that time she saw both her boys go on their first dates, dances and proms. She got to see them both graduate high school and the oldest graduate college and open his law practice. She went on family trips. She went to weddings, reunions, baptisms and BBQ’s. We got to have her with us and got to hear her laughter for many, many extra years. We will miss her, but we appreciate the extra time we had.
“Why do we relay? For Linda, and those still fighting. And we Relay to help prevent the fight for some in the future. More and more cancer is prevented every year. Linda got to live extra because of the research and new developments to cure and fight cancer. If you had gotten to know her you would know that she appreciated the time and never took it for granted. Linda was able to attend our Relay last year and she was impressed by all the work and the money raised.
“I will not be at our Relay this year. I will be in Minnesota attending her funeral. It will be sad but there will be great appreciation for the extra time that we did get to have with her. She fought a really hard fight and was a winner many times over.
“I know that Linda is my cousin and my story and each of you that Relays has your own reasons and hurts. I will miss being with you. I love you all for being my friends and always supporting me.
Barbara”

Blogging Note ---

Read this if you want to see how Soroptimist works:

A GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
“SUPPORT THE TROOPS” PROJECT

SI Davie Club has started a project that must be shared throughout Soroptimist. Through the leadership of Marie Ambrosiono, club members have been collecting personal items for a U.S. Army Reserve troop in Iraq. Marie told the story of how she met a Lieutenant Colonel at their Relay For Life event last November. He described the needs of the soldiers on the front line and how committed they were to the U.S. mission. The club shipped over 60 pounds of requested items in shoeboxes hoping to reach these soldiers in time for the Christmas holiday. Success! They enthusiastically sent a letter of thanks for making their holiday a little happier knowing that “strangers” appreciated their efforts.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we all got involved in supporting our troops?

FQA: Where do I start?
1) See if any members know of anyone serving overseas, if not.
2) Call your local recruiting office of any of the branches of service or
3) Contact your local Red Cross Office. You must have an actual person and Unit to send to. Once you have that, obtain a preference list and send away.

The Davie Club has agreed to support this Unit until they come home. They recently received another letter from the Unit Leader. The message from the soldiers was that the most appreciateD packages are those sent by people they don’t even know. It really lifted their morale knowing they are truly loved and appreciated for their service to our country.

No matter what your political opinions are, we must rally to support our service men and WOMEN, who are so gallantly defending our freedom.

Hats off to the Davie Club for stepping up to the challenge for such a worthy cause and setting a prescedent!!!

P.S. One of the members of the Huntsville Club has a son in Iraq. March 3, Saturday of Service they will be sending packages to his Unit. Free shipping boxes can be obtained from the Post Office and sent (as long as you have an APO address) for $8.10 a box. All that is required is a customs form to accompany each box, listing the contents.

If you would like more information on this project, please feel free to contact Marie Ambrosiono at maa101@aol.com or myself @ RonandLu @aol.com.

In Soroptimist Service,
Louise Barlow,
Chair, Soroptimist Orientation

February has been a busy month and it's hard to believe it's nearly done! The days are flying by so fast! At our club meeting on the 20th, we had the honor of presenting a check to our Violet Richardson Award winner, Victoria Figueroa. She is a remarkable Cypress Bay High School student who developed a program to increase awareness about breast cancer among her fellow students. A very brave English teacher shared her personal experiences as a victim of breast cancer with her students last year, and Victoria was inspired by her teacher to create this very special program. We applaud her!!

PHOTO: Victoria (right) with her mother as club President Dianne Aucamp (left) presents two checks; one for Victoria and one for her organization.

RIDE FOR RELAY!
Many thanks to Wes & Jackie Scott for organizing a super motor bike ride! We raised $276 for Relay for Life and we got to meet Barbara Spiece's new husband, Luke! There were 35 bikes carrying 45 people to dinner at the Rustic Inn Crab House in Dania. The food was good, there were a lot of laughs and I look forward to doing it again ... only next time, I hope my husband has a bike! He was just drooling over them on Saturday night!
