For club members who want to donate,
here's the list of SOLDIERS ' REQUESTS

Moist towelettes in packages and tubs
Bottles of hand soap Soldiers can carry in their utility pockets
Used DVDs (movies) are good -- The Soldiers watch a lot of DVDsbetween missions.
Gummy bears and gummy candies -- For whatever reason they were hard to come by in the PX's, and the Soldiers who like them, love them! You could always identify Soldiers who'd received a good care package because they'd have "gummy belly" until their stash ran out.
Spiced teas (tea bags of flavored teas) are good . . .
Old magazinesare excellent.
Packaged cheese and crackers.
Beef Jerky / Slim Jims
Energy Bars
Gatorade and sweet energy drink mixes (but I also like your CrystalLite)
Hot Sauce (Tabasco, Red Devil, etc.) - wrap glass bottle in duct tape and place in doubled zip-lock bags
Sunflower seeds
Nuts (mixed variety in sealed tins are best) and packages of different varieties of trail mixes
Seasoning Salt (Lawry's, etc) and spices for soups and things
Atomic Fireballs / Jolly Rancher hard candy
Chewing Gum (of all varieties)
Deep Woods Off.
Flyswatters and fly strips are great for summer when insect pests are at their worst
AA and AAA batteries
Personal Hygiene Gear: Disposable Razors, shaving gels, toothbrushesand toothpaste
Eye Wash / Drops (Visine, etc.) for flushing dust and sand out of the eyes
Zip-Lock style Plastic Storage Bags - assorted sizes, heavier freezer style are better

If this doesn’t tug on your heart,
I don’t know what would …

Soroptimist International of Davie does a lot of things to help out in the community. And, I’m not exaggerating here. We provide support to the EASE Foundation, Old Davie School, Hope Outreach, Project Stable, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and Habitat for Humanity and are an education partner with Davie Elementary School. We also provide scholarships and grants to girls and women for advancement of their education. This weekend, the club will participate in the annual Relay for Life at Pioneer Middle School beginning Saturday afternoon.
Recently, one of our club members asked “Why do you Relay?”
The following response came from long-time Soroptimist, Barbara Spiece Granger. She e-mailed it to her “sister” Soroptimists and I’m sending it to you. Once you read it, you’ll understand why. Why we Relay, that is:
“Saturday morning my cousin finally gave up her fight against Breast Cancer. She was diagnosed approximately 14 years ago. She had a bone marrow transplant, hormone therapies, numerous chemo therapies – She tried holistic cures in conjunction with the newest “drugs” on the market. She had some years during that 14 when she was symptom free and some that were hospital intense. During that time she saw both her boys go on their first dates, dances and proms. She got to see them both graduate high school and the oldest graduate college and open his law practice. She went on family trips. She went to weddings, reunions, baptisms and BBQ’s. We got to have her with us and got to hear her laughter for many, many extra years. We will miss her, but we appreciate the extra time we had.
“Why do we relay? For Linda, and those still fighting. And we Relay to help prevent the fight for some in the future. More and more cancer is prevented every year. Linda got to live extra because of the research and new developments to cure and fight cancer. If you had gotten to know her you would know that she appreciated the time and never took it for granted. Linda was able to attend our Relay last year and she was impressed by all the work and the money raised.
“I will not be at our Relay this year. I will be in Minnesota attending her funeral. It will be sad but there will be great appreciation for the extra time that we did get to have with her. She fought a really hard fight and was a winner many times over.
“I know that Linda is my cousin and my story and each of you that Relays has your own reasons and hurts. I will miss being with you. I love you all for being my friends and always supporting me.
Barbara”
